Obituary of Karl A. Mellenger

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Karl Allen Mellenger, age 80, on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at his home in Punta Gorda, Florida, with his wife at his side. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Karl was born on November 22, 1939, in Buffalo, New York, son of the late Raymond Mellenger and Marian (Maleska) Mellenger. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Frederick. Upon his graduation from Canisius High School, Karl enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he proudly served for 6 years. In 1971, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Buffalo State University. In 1978, the Mellengers moved to Kentucky where Karl worked at Ashland Oil as a plant manager for 20 years. Then in 1990, Karl became a deacon in the Catholic Church where he served his parishioners at Holy Family Church for 10 years. In 2012, Karl and Fran decided to retire to Florida, a place that he loved. Karl was known for his sense of humor, quick wit and loved to tell jokes. He is leaving his legacy behind to his 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, who seem to be following in his footsteps. Karl was an avid World War II buff, enjoyed music, photography, played numerous instruments, learned to ballroom dance, and loved riding motorcycles. He was also a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. Karl is survived by his wife, Frances (Rotino) Mellenger, daughters Angela (Mellenger) Mundy and her husband Timothy, Julie (Mellenger) Nolen, and Michelle (Mellenger) Rogers and her husband James. Grandchildren, David (Brandee), Matthew (Jessica), Beau, Erik (Kevin), Alexander (Amber) and Meredith. Great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Eli and Evelyn. A celebration of his life will take place later this year.
