Obituary of Mark Poremba

Mark Poremba of Southampton, NY and Englewood, Florida died on January 6. He was 63. Born on September 15, 1949, to Alan and Edna Poremba, he was the youngest of three brothers, Michael, who survives him, and Don, who predeceased him. He married Anita Bishop in 1968 and they had 32 years together, during which they raised three sons, Jay, Mark and Jason, all of whom survive him. Mr. Poremba was raised in Southampton, graduating from Southampton High School in 1967. During his high school years and after graduation, he worked with his father at Alan's Auto, until they opened their own store, Poremba's Auto on Hampton Road. Poremba's Auto remained in business from 1976 to 1998, at which time the building was leased to All Pro. Mark loved dabbling with cars, and in 1978 he set up a machine shop in the basement of Poremba's Auto, where his son Jay got his interest and start as a machinist. Mr. Poremba had many interests, but he most loved the brotherhood of the Southampton Fire Department, serving as a volunteer member for 35 years; as captain of the Fire Police, then as a member of the Agawam Hose Company and finally the Engine Company. He loved being with the guys at the firehouse cooking and hanging out. His other interests included golf, hunting and fishing. He was a member of Rotunda Golf Club. He was a volunteer at the Englewood United Methodist Church pancake breakfasts and helped prepare meals for Meals on Wheels. In addition to his children he is survived by six grandchildren, Johanna, John, Michael, Christopher, Alex and Elie. Firematic services were held at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton on January 10, followed by a funeral service at the First Presbyterian Church on January 11. A memorial service will be held on February 9 at 10 a.m. at the outdoor pavilion of the Englewood United Methodist Church, 700 East Dearborn Avenue, Englewood. Donations can be made to the Englewood United Methodist Church, or the Southampton Fire Dept. Benevolent Association, PO Box 1435, Southampton, NY 11969.
