Obituary of Beryl Eugene Everist

Beryl Eugene Everist, Sr. age 96, of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Hatfield and Lansdale, died Wednesday evening, April 6, 2016. He was the husband of the late Bertha J. (Ott), who died September 4, 2008. They were married 64 years, at the time of her death. Born in Clemons, Iowa, he was the son of Cady F. and Candace C. (Smith) Everist. Beryl graduated from Clemons High School, Class of 1937. He drove truck for his father's trucking business before entering the U. S. Navy in 1941. Beryl served in combat on a submarine chasing aircraft carrier, the USS Core. He was a group leader for the Catapult Crew. Beryl attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer and served in both the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. After serving 4 years, he was honorably discharged December 18, 1945. He met his wife Bertha, who was sister of one of his fellow sailors. While living in Hatfield, Beryl was very active in community service and his church Heidelberg United Church of Christ, Hatfield. He was involved in the formation of Hatfield Little League. Beryl was one of the WWll vets who helped build the Hatfield American Legion. The family left Hatfield in 1960 for Lansdale, where Beryl was part of the committee that formed the Community Baseball League. He enjoyed golf, gardening, bridge and bowling. He loved his Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. While in Lansdale, he was active with the Masons, Toastmasters and the American Legion, where he was a lifetime member for 68 years. He was also a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Lansdale. When Beryl retired in 1978 from Civil Service at Johnsville Naval Air Station, Willow Grove, he and Bertha moved to Port Charlotte, FL where he continued to enjoy golf and bridge. He also enjoyed traveling, Elder Hostel and working with stained glass. Beryl is survived by twin daughters, Sharon Moran, of Jacksonville, FL, wife of the late Ross Moran and Charlene Gustin, wife of Douglas Gustin of Papillion, NE; a son, Beryl Everist Jr. and wife Barbara of Lansdale; five grandchildren, Michael Baumgartner, Amy Harlow-Kelly, Carrie Hushka, Ryan Everist and Elizabeth DeFeo; and six great- grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his only sibling, Louise Howard. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 15, in Wayside Chapel (Whitemarsh Memorial Park), 1169 Horsham Road, Prospectville, PA 19002, where viewing will take place from 9:30 AM -10:00 AM. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow the memorial service. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to their favorite charity.
