Miriam (Mim) R Rooney, 95, of Port Charlotte, FL, passed away at her residence on Sunday, April 10, 2016. Mim was born in West Milton, OH, to Rev. EJ and Rachel Rohrer. She was a graduate of the Miami Valley School of Nursing in Dayton, OH, with additional training at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati. She started her career as an RN at MVH in pediatrics and obstetrics, where she was also a supervisor and instructor. Her 35-year career also included stints in a doctor's office and occupational health. She married William (Bill) Rooney in 1977 and they soon transitioned from snowbirds to Floridians! Mim was a member of First Presbyterian Church of PC, where she and Bill served on the Visitation Committee. In addition, Mim volunteered at Fawcett Memorial Hospital for 20 years and also volunteered at South Port Square, where she resided for 25 years. Mim enjoyed traveling, arts/crafts (including adult coloring books!), tennis, puzzles, games and reading. Most of all, she loved God, her family and friends. She is survived by her sister, Lois Scheaffer, of Ohio; stepsons, Bill (Betty) Rooney of Texas and Mike (Chris) Rooney of Virginia; 4 step-grandchildren (David, Paul, Brendan and Kay); 5 step-great-grandchildren (Nicole, Ella, Paige, Eliza and Clare); 3 nephews (Lowell, Mike, Jim) and their families; 3 nieces (Joyce, Carol, Sue) and their families; and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bill; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Harold and Martha Rohrer; brother, Carl Rohrer; sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Ken Elsner; and brother-in-law, Fred Scheaffer. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Tidewell Hospice of PC for the compassionate and supportive care that Miriam received. Special thanks to Maggie, Carine, Colette, Lorrie and Jennifer. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, at 1:00 pm at South Port Square in the Gables East Lobby. A service will also be held in Ohio in May. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to: Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238. Miriam was an "angel of mercy" in her profession and a "guardian angel" for her family and friends. Her Christian testimony and legacy of love will live on in those whose lives she touched.
