You saw talent in an 11 year old boy from St. William's in Dorchester in 1965. You taught and influenced him enough to play professionally at 16 and major in music. You were a mentor and Father figure to many of us in Dorchester. Thanks for bringing me under your wing. Still teaching and playing in 2016! George Kintz

Our paths only crossed a half dozen times, but I considered him a friend. I always knew him as Jimmy, as all the Dixieland musicians always called him that. He was an EXCELLENT player,...always played the right notes in the right way. A fine musician and a very sweet man.

When Dr. Gallo was instructing Saint Peter's CYO Marching Band (in Dorchester), I switched from clarinet to trombone. At the time, the trombone and I were the same height. In order to use the spit valve, I had to remove the mouthpiece and work the spit valve with my foot. Dr. Gallo would watch me do this and he'd smile at my determination to make things work. Thank you for all you did for all your Band Kids!

My best memories from middle school and high school are related to band activities. We always knew how much you cared about us not just as musicians but also as people. I feel very fortunate to have had you play a part in my life. Thank you, Mr. Gallo!
P.S. I am glad that I was able to reveal the trick for reaching high notes on the trumpet.... Standing on a chair always works!!

A great loss to me and to the music of many.
I met Jimmy while attending Boston University.
We became close friends throughout our careers
that lasted sixty years.
I was the music director of St. Joseph's Band of Medway. Our friendship became stronger through our years of C.Y.O.
I will say rest in peace my long friend, and will for the last time sign
Figero our special code at B.U.

My name is Dennis J. Sims, my fondest memories of Jim and his wife Marge, were the Christmas's we spent together in Roslindale, Mass., along with a big Italian family. I spoke to him a couple of times when I found out he was living in Florida. Even though I never did get to see him, he and Marge will always be remember in our thoughts.

Jim, You may have left us but your legacy lives on in the many past members of the band. You always said, "You kids made the band what it was." And I always said, "But we had you to follow." We followed you with the enthusiasm, persistence and love that you gave to us. Your work is done but the band lives on through all of us. We love you!

Oh, Mr. Gallo, what a wonderful beginning you gave me and my friends. We were part of the original 11 (on the drums). The memories never left me even though I'm now elderly. It was wonderful to see you again when I could call you Jim, and you were playing in your Jazz Band in Florida.

Many years ago I had the adventure of going to Mansfield Penn. On a band exchange. I had never gone away from home, and I was quite anxious. The wonderful people I stayed with were unable to comfort me, and I didn't want my peers to know I was afraid. The family called to where Mr. Gallo was staying....he came to me....played a card game....and let me know I was safe.
I will remember him by this the rest of my life. We talked about me being adopted and how special I was, and that in life when given a talent, you share it, like he did with all of us.
Years ago I told him I had adopted some children and he told me he knew I would pay it forward and that he was proud of me......
I am blessed because a busy leader took time with a scared child and changed her life forever.....
RIP Mr. Gallo. Thank you.
To the family and friends, I send love and prayers for your loss.....
He was a mighty, gentleman......

My mentor and true friend, have many great memories from our days in Mansfield. Remember the first band and all the hard work you and the newly formed Band Parents Association put in to get all us youngsters into uniforms to represent our school/town. Our mutual love for Drum Corps, and the many trips we made together into St. Kevins, good times. Your journey touched the minds and hearts of so many, you will be missed. RIP Jim.

Mr. Gallo - you were truly an amazing man. You touched the lives of SO many kids, changing their lives, molding them, keeping some on the straight and narrow. The exchanges brought some kids to places they would not have ever have been able to go to on their own. You gave of yourself always without question and I know, for myself, I will be forever grateful for all you have done. You will be missed by many in the world of music. Rest in sweet peace Mr. Gallo.
