Her legacy of courage is now documented in a recent movie 'My Italian Secret-the Forgotten heroes'.
I heard this amazing story of courage from my mom years ago when I was young and had asked her about the scar on her cheek.
A definition of Courage: the ability to do something that frightens you.
She grew up during Mussolini's reign in Italy. When Benito Mussolini's government asked the Italian people to turn on their neighbors, an astoundingly large number said "No." As a result, a higher percentage of Italian Jews were saved than in any other occupied country, aside from Denmark.
Her town of Cellino Attanasio and its residents were part of a secret network in Italy during World War II that hid Jews during Hitler and Mussolini's reign.
The scar on her right cheek came from a piece of hand grenade shrapnel that hit her cheek while running between the convent and the rectory during a raid where Nazi soldiers came looking for Jews. She was only 13 or 14 when this happened. A nun had asked her to take food to the rectory where they were hiding Jews. The Nazi's and the Italian army were ordered to arrest any person caught hiding Jews.
She risked her life at such a young age and I am so proud of her. When I saw the movie I cried and cried. It gave richness and details to my mom's personal experience of a dark time in her life.
The month she turned 16 in May of 1945 the war basically ended. My mom was encouraged by her grandmother and mother to go to college and in 1947 she entered nursing school.
