Obituary of Gilbert Lee Johnson

Gilbert Lee Johnson, 87, of Deep Creek, Port Charlotte, FL, husband of Gladys (Archer) Johnson, departed this life on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 peacefully at his home. Gil was born in Hartford, CT on March 2, 1928, to the late Ellen Cummings. He was a lifelong resident of CT before moving to Florida in 1989. Prior to moving to Florida, Gil retired as a Correctional Officer from the CT Department of Corrections after 21 years of dedicated service. He served six years on the Advisory Board of Directors for the Asnuntuck Community College (Ct). , and was a Past President of the Hartford CT Chapter of the International Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motor Club, of which he was a member for 13 years. Gil received the Governor's Civic Leadership Award in recognition of outstanding service rendered as a Jaycee to the community. Upon moving to Florida, Gil served as treasurer and membership chairperson with the Charlotte County Jazz Society from 1994-2007, and served on the Deep Creek Street & Drainage Advisory Committee. Gil will forever be remembered and cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Gladys, his daughters Kathrine (John) Robinson of Port Charlotte FL, Pauline Wiggins and Sandra Johnson of Ct., Sondra Davis, of FL., Michael (Julie) Davis and Edward Davis of CT., 11 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, a host of family and friends whom were blessed to know him and will fondly remember him as "Coach", and special friend "Bob the Cat". In addition to his mother, Gil was predeceased by his son, Gilbert L. Johnson Jr. Gil loved listening to jazz, playing golf, bowling, and community involvement, and cruising the seas with his loving wife Gladys. He enjoyed being with his family, and having fun with friends. Gil touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and maintained his trademark sense of humour all the way to the end of his life. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, April 6, 2015, at 11:00 am at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 9400 Indian Spring Cemetery Rd., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
