"To such grieving persons I can only say, lift your head and your hearts. Surely you did your best and surely Charlie did his best for as long as he could. Remember, now, that his battles and torments are over. Our friend died on his own battlefield, fought against adversaries that were as real to him as the loss of him to us. They took toll of his energies and endurance. They exhausted the last vestiges of his courage and strength. At last, those adversaries overwhelmed him. The battle was not lost however; as there were a host of victories. He won our admiration; we give him credit for this bravery on the battlefield and credit for the courage, pride and hope that he used his weapons as long as he could. We should remember not his death, but his daily victories gained through his love, family and friends, for music. Remember, he was victorious over overwhelming odds. Remember not the years we thought he had left, but the intensity with which he lived the years he had. Only God knows what this child of his suffered in the silent skirmishes that took place in his soul, but our consolation is that God does know and understand." R.W.
