Obituary of Edith D McDonough

Edith Drysdale (Buchanan) McDonough, M.D., age 86, of Punta Gorda, Florida, died on December 14, 2013. Born on July 24, 1927 in London, England, she came to this country in 1931 and lived in Scarsdale, NY before moving to Chappaqua, NY where she attended Skywood Hall and Brantwood Hall, graduating in 1945. She graduated from Vassar College in 1948 and New York Medical College in 1953. It was at NYMC that she met and married her husband Edward. They took their internship and residencies at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, NY and she became a staff member there in Anesthesia. After a few years, she semi-retired to stay at home and bring up their 5 children. In 1977 they moved to Cape Cod where she practiced office OB-Gyn with her husband before moving to Punta Gorda in 1990. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward T. McDonough Jr., M.D. of Punta Gorda; 3 sons: Edward (Kathy) McDonough of Lewes, DE, Kevin (Sheri) McDonough of Charleston, SC and Jamie (Patty) McDonough of Penfield, NY; 2 daughters: Kathy (Brendan) Layton (Chadds Ford, PA) and Mary (Michael) May of Columbia, MD; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was a member of Twin Isles Country Club where she was on several committees and a past president of the ladies 9-holers. She was a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital (now known as Peace River Regional Medical Center) since 1992. She loved sailing, cruising and the water and was past president of the Bass River Yacht Club Ladies from 1983-1987, Cape Cod, MA. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Susan B. Komen foundation. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 11:00 am at Charlotte Memorial, 9400 Indian Spring Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda FL 33950. A reception will be held immediately following the memorial service at the Twin Isle Country Club at Arrangements by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Crematory and Cemetery
