Obituary of Robert E. Thompson

Robert E. "Bob" Thompson, 85, of Port Charlotte, Florida went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte. Bob was born July 15, 1928 in Caskey, Kentucky to G. B. and Fanny Mary (nee Hendricks) Thompson and moved to this area 28 years ago from New Albany, IN. He worked as a machine operator before retiring from Phillip Morris and also worked for 16 years with the Texas Rangers in Port Charlotte. Bob managed a Babe Ruth baseball team in Indiana, a church softball team, played amateur baseball, fast pitch softball, and basketball in a church league. He was a member of the Port Charlotte Shuffleboard Club, US Bowling Congress, and volunteered with the Punta Gorda Alliance Church bread ministry where he was a member. Bob was also an avid golfer, bowler, and shuffleboard player. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Army. Mr. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Dolores (nee Flock) Thompson of Port Charlotte; daughters, Karen T. DeLacy, and her husband, Roger, of Punta Gorda, FL, Kathy M. Marshall of Arcadia, FL, and Robin K. Purlee, and her husband, Daniel, of Sellersburg, IN; sister, Nita Gervin, and her husband, Levern of Fenwick, MI; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 4 nieces; and 3 nephews. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ramona Joan Crady, and a grandson. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00PM on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 12687 SW County Road 769 (Kings Highway) in Lake Suzy. A Funeral Service will follow at the funeral home with Dr. Clint Stasney officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 11:00AM on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota.
