Obituary of Leroy D Herman

Leroy D. Herman passed away peacefully on January 17, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones in Punta Gorda Florida. He battled cancer and Alzheimers and fought ferociously and never gave up. Leroy lived a wonderful life with his wife, Donella, and his family. He was born in Independence, Missouri on August 31,1935. He was raised in a farming family and milked over 60 Holstein cows and helped plant crops in childhood and into his adult life. He attended Blue Springs Elementary and High School. He graduated as H.S. Class Valedictorian. He played many high school sports. He was a good athlete and excelled in scholastics. He had a love for learning and was an avid reader. He attended Missouri University and graduated with both a Physics and a Mathematics, B.S. undergraduate degrees. In Tacoma, Washington he received his Meteorology degree. In 1963, Leroy married Donella Johnson. He met her on a blind date on News Year Eve at Lake Tapawingo in Mo. They later moved to Washington, DC where he worked as a Satellite Meteorologist for NOAA. His entire career was working for the government. While living in D.C. Leroy got his Masters Degree. Leroy was very proud of his 3 children and 4 grandchildren and loved having his family around him. Leroy’s favorite pastimes were reading, golfing, playing bridge, traveling, dining out, theater, opera, seeing live music, and working puzzles. He loved to travel with his wife and saw over 12 countries and always said he loved being near the water. His favorite location was Kwajalein, Marshall Islands where his eldest daughter, Lori, was born. Leroy loved the ocean & beaches and especially enjoyed the Venice Jetty, where he lived with Donella for 23yrs. Leroy was in the Air Force Reserve so he will be cremated & buried at Sarasota Veterans Memorial Cemetery next to his wife, Donella, who preceded him in death on July 31, 2016. He is survived by his daughter Lori (Bill) Brisselli, Nancy (Gabe) LeBrun; and son Douglas (Cory) Herman. Also, four grandchildren-Kyara, Noah, & Holly LeBrun, and Brett Herman; and sister-in-law Marjorie L. Williams. Leroy David Herman was loved by his family and those he met along the way. He wasn’t a big talker, but, loved being part of the group and listening to others speak. He has had a quick wit and always made us laugh. He was an intelligent, kind, caring, wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed living at Hampton Manor and all the wonderful staff and residents. He made many friends. We will all miss him dearly. WE LOVE YOU, DAD!!!
