Obituary of Margarethe Nichols

Margarethe “Margie” Nichols, 78, of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away on April 25th, 2021 at Fawcett Hospital. She was born in Zerbst, Germany on May 1, 1942. She left Germany with her mother when she was 9 years old to escape the war and settled in Uruguay where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism. In 1964, she moved to Florida, but she always longed to return to Uruguay. She gave birth to her beloved daughter, Janet in 1965. She was married to Fred Nichols in 1976 but they were divorced in 1984. Margie was a long-time fixture at Circle K, where she made many friends over the years. She enjoyed crocheting and would ask your shoe size so she could make you a pair of slippers. She crocheted flowers and butterflies and if she could anything you wanted and handed them out to the many nurses and care givers that cared for her over the last few years. In 2019, an Ancestry DNA test identified that family was living in Port Charlotte. Meeting her nephew in 2020 was the highlight of a difficult Covid year. There were many family dinners, laughs and plenty of Mexican Train Domino games. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother and sister. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Oquendo, niece, Nicole Pratt, and nephews, Jason and Shawn Pratt. Margie will be cremated. A celebration of life will be held at The Wesley Banquet Hall at 3791 Tamiami Tr in Port Charlotte Fl 33952 on June 12th from noon until 4.
