Obituary of Isabel Hylton

Memories of Isabel Isabel Smith was born June 29, 1932 to Lionel Smith and Isadora Carter Smith in Panama City, Panama. She grew up there and was educated in the Seventh Day Adventist School system with her three sisters, Daisy, Clarissa and Jane. Isabel met the love of her life, Earl Ralph Hylton, Sr. in Panama. They later married and had three children, Margo, Earl Jr. and Monique. Isabel was a visionary and felt there would be better life opportunities in the United States. The family migrated from Panama in 1960 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. The early days in Brooklyn were filled with hard work but were balanced with good times. Isabel and the family spent time exploring all of the many New York attractions and enjoying friends and family at many parties inside and outside of the home. During her career, Isabel worked as a nanny, seamstress, post office clerk and most notably, a dedicated employee of JPMorgan Chase Bank. She retired from her position of Supervisor in Research & Compliance after over 20 years of service in 1992. One of the characteristics which defined the person who we know as Isabel Hylton is her undying willingness to help all in need starting with her family, extended family, friends and those who barely knew her. If it was money, food, advice, time to listen or just a shoulder to cry on; Isabel was always there for anyone who was in need. She truly enjoyed helping people especially those less fortunate. She was always looking back; extending a hand, reaching out to all those she could. Isabel was a faithful and devoted Christian. After moving to Queens, New York in the early 1970s she joined the Jamaica Seventh Day Adventist Church in the early 1980s, where she was a dedicated member for many years. Her desire to serve others was evident as she worked in various ministries of the church including the Treasury Department, Sabbath School and Lay Ministries. She also served as a Deaconess and started a personal ministry to feed the homeless on the streets of the Bowery in New York. The church later adopted the idea and utilized it as part of its regular ministry programs. After the untimely death of her husband in 1988, she decided to relocate to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1994 and was instrumental in the development of the Faith Seventh Day Adventist Church. She served as the Treasurer for many years and received numerous awards and acknowledgments for her creative and successful fundraising efforts. She continued to serve her community as a volunteer at the Homeless Coalition. We all have our own instances where her effortless sense of right and wrong kept her on the right path; even if the answer was not known at the time. When others were fighting just to provide steady food and shelter for their families; Isabel was able through hard work, sacrifice with her husband; get the American Dream: buy a house; and keep it. That house served as the initial landing point for many extended family members making their way through New York on their road to a better life. It also provided a window into the heart and character of Isabel. Isabel loved to travel and enjoyed many cruises and vacations to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mediterranean and Europe with family and friends. She was a strong independent woman that all will remember as a visionary, dedicated in service to both God and her community and someone who enjoyed celebrating life events.
