Obituary of Virginia G. Dennis

Virginia Gwendolyn (Shipley) Dennis Virginia "Ginny" (Shipley) Dennis, formerly of Poughkeepsie, NY, died on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at The Palms of Punta Gorda, Punta Gorda, Florida. Virginia was born in Cove Run, Pennsylvania on March 16, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Earnest and Viola May (Butler) Shipley. She was a graduate of North Union High School in Uniontown, PA. Virginia married Harold "Bud" Dennis on October 19, 1941 in Cumberland, MD. They lived in Oklahoma while Harold was in the Army. They moved to Poughkeepsie, NY in 1946. Virginia was employed by the New York Telephone Co. for over 30 years. She and her husband retired to Florida in 1980. They were members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie, and transferred their membership to Friendship United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda. Harold passed away in 2008. Virginia was known for her baking and cooking abilities, in addition to her macramé and crocheting. She loved socializing and entertained many folks in her home in New York and Florida. She was featuring in the local newspaper for her candy making. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Steve Turner of Wappingers Falls, NY; her granddaughter and husband, Meredith and Brandon Eng, of Toronto, Canada; her granddaughter, Megan Karcher of Rhinebeck, her grandson and wife, Bryan and Tiffanie Karcher, Poughkeepsie, NY, three step-grandchildren and 2 step-great grandchildren. Virginia was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, Harold, and her two brothers, Robert and Giles. Arrangements are under the direction of Charlotte Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, Punta Gorda, Florida. Private services will be held in January.
