Obituary of Mary R. DeGaeta

Mary R. DeGaeta, 93, of Port Charlotte passed away peacefully on the morning of November 17th at Hospice House of Port Charlotte. Mary was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 27, 1917 daughter of the late Vincent and Lucy (Fulco) Leotta. She attended a trades school and became a talented seamstress. She met her late husband, Paul, a New York City Firefighter and they married in 1939. Upon her husband's retirement from FDNY, they moved to Harbour Heights where they were among the developments early residents. They were involved in, and helped charter clubs like the Elks and Italian American Club. Mary wrote a social column for a monthly Harbour Heights development publication and contributed regularly to a society column in the Punta Gorda Herald. Mary's was survived by three children, Janet Williams of Port Charlotte; Barbara Stevenson of Ft Walton Beach; and Paul DeGaeta of Harbour Heights; She also is survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to Tidewell Hospice House of Charlotte County. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 10-11 AM at the Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 9400 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday following the visitation at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
